project lead the way
A STEM Initiative for Billings Public Schools
in partnership with the Education Foundation for BPS
Welcome to the future! Billings Public Schools, the Education Foundation and community leaders are taking a bold step to immerse our students in a rigorous Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculum. We are committed to boosting student engagement and innovative thinking while developing problem-solving and communication skills. Buoyed by the success of the Billings Career Center's Pre-Engineering and Biomedical Sciences program, our leadership team chose Project Lead the Way's elementary curriculum, Launch and middle school curriculum, Gateway to get things started.
In an effort to develop a pipeline of STEM-savvy students, we propose offering Project Lead the Way’s Launch program for our kindergarten through fifth grades students, the middle school curriculum Gateway, and continue expansion of programs at the high school level. We propose a multi-year implementation, starting with five elementary schools beginning the 2014-15 school year: Arrowhead, Beartooth, Bench, Miles Avenue, and Washington Elementary Schools. For the 2015-16 school year, we added Alkali Creek, Broadwater, Burlington, Eagle Cliffs, Highland, Meadowlark, Newman, and Poly Drive Elementary along with the Gateway Foundation Course, Design & Modeling, at Will James and Riverside Middle School. As the Bringing STEM Education to Life through Relevancy enters its third year (2016-17 school year), we plan to implement Project Lead the Way in 7 elementary schools: Big Sky, Bitterroot, Boulder, Orchard, Ponderosa, Rose Park, and Sandstone. Will James Middle School added Design and Modeling this school year and will be expanding Project Lead The Way next year with the addition of Automation and Robotics. The Billings Heights middle schools, Castle Rock and Medicine Crow, will be the first middle schools to incorporate Project Lead The Way classes at the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The Billings Career Center - a high school providing career & technology education for Billings Skyview, West, and Senior High students - has expanded to add a Pre-engineering course for freshmen. They already offer 3 years of Biomedical Science and 3 years of Pre-engineering.
We know there is more work to be done to support our students in providing 21st Century skills and curriculum to increase the opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. There is a great need in our community, state, and nation to prepare our students for careers in these fields.
THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS..... Their support has made Project Lead the Way a success for nearly 2,000 students this school year in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. Thank you for your leadership and investment in our students' futures and in our future community and workforce.
